The temazcal is a ceremonial steam bath from pre-Hispanic Mexico. What to expect, how to prepare and how it is done at Finca El Péndulo, near Guadalajara.
The temazcal is a steam bath that dates back to pre-Hispanic Mexico. Its name comes from the Nahuatl temazcalli, “house of steam”. Inside a small dome, stones heated in a fire are placed at the centre and sprinkled with water and herbal infusions. The steam fills the space and the session moves through stages, with songs, silence or intentions.
What it feels like
The heat rises slowly. Many people describe it as a mix of effort and rest: the body sweats, the breath slows and the mind grows quiet. Stepping out into fresh air or cold water afterwards leaves a feeling of lightness.
How to prepare
- Eat lightly a few hours before.
- Drink water before and after.
- Bring a swimsuit or comfortable cotton clothes and a towel.
- If you have a health condition, are pregnant or have high blood pressure, check with your doctor first.
- You can step out of the temazcal at any moment if you need to.
